U.S. Presidential Inauguration Events – 2001-2009, Union Station, Washington, DC
The past three U.S. Presidential Inaugural Committees chose Union Station as the venue to host a total of nine inaugural events from 2001 to 2009. Events included three receptions/balls for the first inauguration of President George W. Bush, three receptions/balls for President Bush’s second inauguration in 2005, and three receptions/balls for President Obama’s inauguration in 2009. Each event drew more than 1,000 attendees, with the largest hosting 6,500 people.
IPC provided the security for all nine events at Union Station. Each event required months of advanced planning in direct coordination with the U.S. Secret Service, D.C. Metro Police, Amtrak Police, FBI, Marine Corps and several other assisting federal agencies. All events featured appearances by either the President or Vice-President.
Among the many tasks assigned to us, IPC assisted in coordinating VIP escorts, clearing buildings for pre-event bomb detection and security set up, as well as providing general security at the venue. Due to the historic nature of the 2009 inauguration, crowds were significantly larger than in past years - yet not a single significant security related issue occurred.
Providing security to inaugural events require the highest level of technical and public interaction skills. On all nine occasions at Union Station, IPC received extremely favorable reviews from the client, the guests and the senior agents and officers of the federal agencies involved.
